Off to the Races: Emerald Downs Opening Day is April 22

April 11, 2018

Head to nearby Emerald Downs Racetrack and Casino for some hoof-pounding excitement. Live horse racing returns April 22.

Cue the bugle. It’s spring, and that means live horse racing in the Pacific Northwest is just around the corner.

April 22 is opening day at the famed Emerald Downs Racetrack and Casino just a short trek from Kent. Whether you plan to celebrate opening weekend or visit another time during the season, a day at the races is loads of fun for the whole family.

Plan your trip to the track

  • Weekend fun through September. Races are held Saturday and Sunday April 22 through May 6. Beginning May 11, races are slated for Friday, Saturday and Sunday through September 30.
  • The price is right. General admission is $9. Military personnel with I.D. and children 17 and under are always free. Reserved grandstand and box seats are also available. Parking is free unless you opt for preferred ($10) or valet ($15-$20).
  • Dine in or BYO. Take your pick from loads of traditional park concessions, or head to the fifth-floor Rainier Restaurant for a fine-dining experience. You’re also welcomed to bring your own feast (we hear Kent has great restaurants) and enjoy a track-side picnic.
  • Pick your pony. Visit the paddock area to watch the horses, trainers and jockeys prep for the upcoming race. Even if you’re not betting, it’s a fun way for you and the kids to pick your favorites. Who cares if it’s based on what the jockey is wearing?
  • Learn what the hay happens behind the scenes. Emerald Downs offers tours of the stable area on Saturday mornings. Call 253-288-7711 to reserve your spot.
  • Have some fun and games beyond the track. The fifth-floor Clubhouse Casino offers all your favorite table games, a bar and lounge, and a state-of-the-art simulcast area.

Stay and play

Why not stay in Kent and make a weekend of it? Make the short drive to the track, or bus from Kent Station Transit Center to Auburn and catch a handy shuttle. You can also take a leisurely bike ride to Emerald Downs along the Interurban Trail.
