Unexpected dining gems and experiences often make the best travel stories. Altha’s Louisiana Cajun & Deli in Kent, Washington, is a best-kept secret that will leave you with lasting memories.

Those looking for authentic Cajun vibes can find it right here. Owner Aneel Robinson eagerly shares his enthusiasm for foods and products from his home state of Louisiana.

Serving up soul in every spoonful

In Altha’s deli, the menu changes daily. Oxtail and turkey neck with jambalaya, stuffed pork chops with crawfish, fried chicken and peach cobbler are served throughout the week. On weekends, the deli sells about 25 gallons a day of gumbou — Aneel’s creation of gumbo made with boudin, a Cajun sausage.

Sauces, spices, meats and other specialty items fill Altha’s grocery section. All the products come from the South. For authentic dishes without the work, Altha’s freezer is stocked with pre-made jambalaya, boudin, étouffée and other entrees to thaw, heat and enjoy at home.

Quarts of Blue Bell ice cream draw the majority of customers to the shop in downtown Kent. Altha’s friendly staff keeps them coming back, some as far away as British Columbia, Portland, eastern Washington and Idaho.

Aneel grew up in Louisiana and moved to the Puget Sound area after visiting his aunt in Tacoma 40 years ago. She encouraged Aneel to relocate and take advantage of the economic opportunities.

He brought his Louisiana influence to Kent in a 172-square-foot shop that opened in 2016. After four months, demand was so great that the store moved to its current downtown location at 201 E. Meeker Street. Less than two years later, Aneel acquired the space next door and made it Altha’s deli.

Making customers feel like family is Aneel’s priority. He answers questions while offering free samples from the deli menu. “I don’t want you to buy nothin’ you haven’t tried before. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it,” he said.

Aneel recommends the gumbou for first-time visitors. Another signature item is the boudin (sausage made with pork, celery, onion, bell pepper and cooked rice), a staple of Cajun cuisine.

Future plans include an updated website and online shopping for Altha’s products.
